This is a classic base layer, designed to be worn tight, next to the skin. There are no bells and whistles and it feels suspiciously light, but don't let that put you off – it's all about the fabric and the fit.
The fabric is polypropylene, the original base layer fibre, reworked by Gore to maintain its excellent performance qualities but improve its wearability (translation: make it less smelly and easier to wash).
Knowing that it's polypropylene, we were expecting a synthetic handle but the feel is actually more silky. We were also surprised by how warm this top is. Though it feels light, the inside is brushed so you get the cosiness of something thicker, and because it's so sleek, you can layer up without feeling bulky.
We pushed its wicking abilities to the limit on warmer autumn days but it never felt waterlogged. Easy layering is helped by the cut and the fit of the Turtleneck – it goes on tight, but it doesn't feel at all restrictive, thanks to the careful shaping. The sleeve design is especially good and it sat just right when we were riding.
If you've never tried a top like this, you won't realise what you're missing. But with just the right combination of fabric, fit and functionality, the Gore base layer is something of a revelation. It actually feels as though you're not wearing anything at all.
