Assos TK 434 S5 3/4-length tights review

There's no ignoring the fact that these are expensive 3/4-length bib knicks, and that they’re going to have to be seriously good to justify that expense. Initial appearances are good, presented in their own neat box, and once on they impress with both looks and comfort, boasting Assos’s new super-plush S5 chamois insert.

And this comfort stays with you even during prolonged rides. The light mesh back stays sweat-free, and while it’s hard to measure the efficacy of the Spandex compression panels – Assos claim they delay the ‘fatigue process’ – they are very supportive.

The TK 434s are nominally designed for spring, autumn and cooler summer days, for temperatures from 14-22°C, but we found them suitable for riding with the thermometer barely in single figures, our knees staying cosy thanks to the warmer, heavier weight kneecap panels.

The 3cm wide leg grippers do a great job of keeping the knicks comfortably in place. As for styling, there are some quite quirky touches: only one of the legs has a reflective Assos logo, while there are also a couple of small rubberised Assos logos placed seemingly at random – one on the left thigh, one on the right buttock. Those Swiss, eh!

The overall result is a seriously good pair of knicks that can make a pretty decent claim to justify their high price, and they’re likely to become a firm favourite on all but the very warmest summer days. And that S5 pad really is supremely comfortable.
